What are Lemurian crystals?
The Lemurian name is given to clear quartz crystals with a very distinct growth habit. They feature exceptional clarity, slightly tapered walls leading to the point, and horizontal ladder-like lines climbing the sides. Lemurians have a very distinct appearance, but did you know they also have a unique energetic history?
There are many blog posts about these mystical crystals, so why another one? MY goal is to dive into the history and lore of these crystals from all angles – facts and legends – so that you can make informed decisions when considering them for your collection.
The “lemurian” name was first connected to crystals in Feb 2000
By the well-known Crystal author Katrina Raphaell, in a Newsletter entitled “The Lemurian Seed Crystals” (click to read full article). In this article, Katrina identified a new discovery of quartz in the Diamantina region of Minas Gerais Brazil. Additionally, she linked them with the lost civilization of Lemuria. This society was highly advanced, deeply spiritual and connected to the earth. Before they were lost, it is said their knowledge was deposited in these crystals, and saved to come forth in our time. Further, holding one will link you to all lemurian crystals and their collective wisdom. Besides her numerous publications, there is little proof that Katrina is indeed a certified or qualified mystic. regardless, her theory has been embraced.
There are a few facts to be considered….
…the actual name for Lemuria and the continent itself was invented in the 1860s by a zoologist, Phillip Lutley Sclater. He was attempting to explain why Lemurs existed in both Madagascar and India, and so “Lemuria” was invented – a lost continent that once connected the two countries.
His theory was discredited with the discovery of continental drift and plate tectonics early in the 20th century. However, this did not stop the legend of Lemuria and its lost people from spreading and gaining traction, even to populating it with 15-foot tall, 4-armed beings. It is worth noting, that in 2013, scientists did find evidence to partially support Sclater’s theory. It is possible there was a small island-like land bridge between the continents. However, with no evidence of civilization they proposed it instead be called “Mauritia.”

purists believe Lemurians are only found in Brazil.
…in the original Diamantina find. And yet we find Lemurians on the market from around the world, including other regions of South American. Are all others fake? According to Katrina’s original newsletter, it might seem so. But from a Geologic perspective, the Lemurian growth habit is not altogether rare. It’s just one of the ways quartz grows. And there is no mineralogical difference between Lemurian quartz and regular quartz.
To add a Metaphysical layer to this, some scholars believe that before their land was lost, some of the Lemurian people fled to neighboring countries – Tibet, the Himalayas, India, Asia, etc. And Lemurian growth habits have been identified in crystals from these areas. Others will argue that Lemuria was not originally located in Brazil, therefore the location of the famous crystals cannot be isolated to an unconnected continent.
The debate of the Lemurian crystals is ongoing…
In fact, we may never have a universally accepted answer. If only they could talk – crystals are as old as the earth itself and contain its story within their structure. Perhaps part of their allure is trying to understand them. In the end, what determines a true Lemurian can only be decided by the holder, and what is important to them: i.e. location, appearance, and perceived energy.
