This Scarab seal is a vintage item from 1992. It is from Egypt, where it was hand-carved from a mix of resin and Basalt from the Giza plateau. We have a small collection of these available in the shop – no two are alike. They each differ slightly in size and style, and each has unique hieroglyphs carved along the back and base of the beetle. Artifacts have been found fashioned after this design; it is believed they were used as seals. Absolutely gorgeous, powerful, and unique pieces!

In Egyptian culture, the scarab is often depicted in everything from hieroglyphs to jewelry, statues, and engravings. It is believed the scarab will protect against disease and death and was also interpreted as a symbol of resurrection. When placed next to the dead it meant they could be resurrected and thus attain eternal life. Modeled after the dung beetle, which rolls balls of dung to its nest, the scarab was closely connected with the sun god Khepri, who similarly rolled the sunrise over the horizon each day. Thus, it became a symbol of rebirth, regeneration, and protection in the afterlife.
