1.25″ Fossil Sawfish (Onchopristis) Rostral Barb Tooth 0.1 Oz

This tooth measures 1.25 x 0.75 x 0.3″ and weighs 0.1 Oz. From Morocco.

This is a genuine tooth from the Onchopristis, or “giant saw”. It does have one repair at the center – due to the age and nature of these teeth, they almost always come out of the ground in multiple pieces. This extinct giant saw-skate lived during the Cretaceous period. It had a long shovel-shaped snout called a rostrum, lined on both sides with tooth-like hook and barb structures called denticles. The Onchopristis used this hook-edged snout to dig for shellfish in shallow waters, similar to the smaller sawfish of today.
